Why Build Smarter Safe?
You may be surprised to know that there are very few websites out there offering similar services to Smarter Safe. In fact, the only reason this website exists at all is that the webmaster got burgled, and the thieves took the PC, laptop and the usb back up drive! Faced with having to rebuild an entire home invertory, finding an online site to help with the task seemed the simplest option. But there was nothing out there that quite fit the bill. So Smarter Safe was born of a genuine need. And talking to others about the idea convinced us that this is a service worth offering.
Why Offer it Free?
There's no catch, it is simply the easiest way to let people try out the idea. Smarter Safe is a fairly new idea, too, so it is just not fair to expect everyone to commit before they try it out.
There are loads of really nice extra features available for Premium Members, but it should be each person's choice whether they want to pay for those extras. Research has forecast that actually the majority of users would be happy to pay a reasonable fee to get the full package.
Tell Me More About the Privacy and Security Thing
Put simply, when you register on Smarter Safe, your email address is the only identifying piece of information you need to provide. The password is encrypted at the time it is created, so it can't be intercepted even if someone was deliberately trying to hack the server during the time a member is signing in.
All registrations have to be validated by the user clicking a link in an email sent to their registration address. The user name and password are not accessible until they have been validated. When items are entered, they are also encrypted using a unique key, so there is no free text in the database. The database itself is password protected, and housed in a secure facility on a server with all the necessary protection against hackers and other intrusions. Finally, because we do not keep any other identifying information on the database, and all attached files are stored in coded folders, there is no way to link the items listed in the database with the address of the member.
